All I want to do is lessen the burden of my tuition on my parents.

Keridawn started this conversation
I an the oldest in a lower income family.  I attend Concordia University in Seward, NE.  My family moved two years ago.  My dad owns his own business, and since the move he has not been successful in establishing his business.  My mom has taken a pay cut of over half of what she was making.  Our family income, which was up over $40,000 is now less than $20,000.  Because of this drastic difference, my family is having trouble paying bills let alone, a child in college.
Concordia University is a private Christian (LCMS) school and with being a private school. the tuition is much more expensive.  Choosing to attend CUNE, was one of the greatest decisions of my life.  My parents are trying their best to support me, but because of my college choices, it is difficult.  All I would like to do is lessen the burden of my tuition on my parents.
I get a little financial aid from my school, but it is not near enough to close the gap we have to pay.  We filled out the FAFSA and it said that we could afford less than $500.00 to my higher education.  My school's tuition/room/board is just under $23,000.00.  I have received, at the most, $10,000.00 in scholarships, loans, and grants.  That leaves at least $12,500 difference that my family has to come up with each year so that I can continue my education.
I plan to become a teacher.
I want to become certified as a Lutheran teacher (that is why I chose CUNE). I am double-emphasizing within my education major.  Double-emphasizing means that I can teach more than one thing within the elementary school system.  My first emphasis is Physical Education (PE) and my second is Early Childhood Education.  Both areas are in need of teachers.

Oh, it is a pity that those two Lutheran organizations cannot offer you help but it is certain that there must be others that could. Wish you luck in finding them!

Thanks for the information. there is a problem though with some lutheran scholarships. Using the ones you posted, the St John Lutheran scholarship is only for members of the particular St John Church. The Siebert Lutheran Foundation specifically states not for scholarships. But I that hasn't stopped me from looking into it a little more.

Well, the Pell grant is a major source of financial aid but is certainly not the only one. There are federal sources of financial aid and there are non-governmental ones. You could browse aidpage to see for federal funding. In the coming weeks we plan to add more and more programs, especially private foundations and other non-governmental sources of funding. Also, there are many Lutheran organizations, for instance The Siebert Lutheran Foundation, St. John Lutheran Church Foundation, etc. that provide grants for education. The links to the official sites of those foundations are posted in the section below. Probably you could qualify for financial assistance through them?

I do qualify for the Pell grant and I have applied for scholarship through my district. I included that in that $10,000 that I'm already getting.

Hi Keridawn, Haven't you tried sources of financial aid like the Pell program or any Christian foundations that might be giving grants for students at Christian universities?
